About MOW

Meals On Wheels - History

Meals on Wheels began in 1971 as a grassroots effort to feed the elderly homebound of Asheville. As part of a Federally funded Model Cities program, volunteers delivered meals to 12 area seniors living alone and unable to cook for themselves. In 1974 after federal funding was discontinued, Meals on Wheels of Asheville and Buncombe County (MOW-ABC) was formed. That first year, MOW-ABC volunteers delivered home cooked meals to 70 clients. During the 1980's and 90's, the demand for services continued to grow. In order to keep pace and remain cost effective, MOW-ABC moved from purchasing and delivering pre-packaged meals to setting up their own commercial kitchen and cooking all their food in 2001. Since that time, demand for services has increased an additional 57%!  Today, MOW-ABC serves over 400 elderly homebound clients and is the largest provider of at-home meal delivery services in Western North Carolina!

Programs and Services

Meals are our calling card!  We often get asked How much does it cost to feed a senior?

Compared with the cost of a nursing home ($7,000 - $9,000 per month) or even 1 trip to the emergency room!

In addition to providing hot, nutritious meals and friendly visits, Meals on Wheels offers the following programs and services to foster independence and enhance our senior's quality of life.

Operating Schedule

MOW-ABC is open Monday-Thursday 8AM - 4PM and Fridays from 8AM-3PM except on these holidays.  For the safety of our volunteers and staff, during the winter months, MOW-ABC will not deliver during periods of inclement weather that force Asheville City Schools to close.  MOW-ABC closing announcements will be made on WLOS-TV and WWNC Radio.
