VOLUNTEER WITH MEALS ON WHEELS

What Volunteers Do

  • Deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors across Buncombe County

  • Provide a brief informal wellness and safety check with each visit which helps reduce hunger and isolation for older adults

  • Offer a warm smile, a kind word, and compassionate companionship

  • Alert staff if anything seems out of the ordinary

and share a moment of meaningful companionship.

Flexible Opportunities

  • Volunteers deliver once a week as a regular route driver, or as a substitute when the regular driver is not able.

  • Routes take about 2 hours (or less) and deliveries happen Monday–Friday, before noon

  • Routes serve 10–16 seniors and go directly from our office located near downtown Asheville to your assigned neighborhood area.

Why Volunteer?

Your visit helps seniors remain in the homes they love, surrounded by memories, not moving into costly or isolating care settings. For many of these elders, you may be the only person they see all day. A friendly greeting and quick check-in can brighten their mood, ease loneliness, and ensure they’re okay. Every route delivered supports a community where older adults are nourished, safe, and valued. Click here to fill out a volunteer application!
