Farm to Elder

Farm to Elder is a transformative program that delivers fresh, locally sourced produce directly to homebound seniors. Through strategic partnerships with local farmers, we ensure our seniors receive the highest quality and nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. Farm to Elder nourishes our community's elderly population while promoting sustainable agriculture and fostering a healthier, happier lifestyle.

New this year! We're partnering with Mother Earth Food to bring farm-fresh and nutrient-dense produce into the homes of our seniors.

Mother Earth Food, a family-owned home delivery service based in Asheville, is dedicated to connecting people with locally sourced, organic food. They carefully curate a selection of over 1,000 items from more than 300 local farmers and food artisans across Western North Carolina.

Other Farm to Elder Partners include:

  • KT’s Orchard providing fresh fruit to include berries, apples and pears.

  • Mountain Foods providing fresh fruit and vegetables our chef incorporates into our daily meals.

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for maintaining good health. Seniors can benefit from the abundance of nutrients found in fresh produce, supporting their overall well-being and boosting their immune systems.

  • Several studies have linked a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to better cognitive function and a reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. The antioxidants and phytochemicals found in fresh produce have been associated with brain health and improved cognitive performance.

  • Certain fresh produce, such as dark leafy greens and broccoli, are excellent sources of calcium and vitamin K, crucial for maintaining strong bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Including these foods in a senior's diet can improve bone health and reduce the likelihood of fractures.
