FAQ

  • Any resident of Buncombe county, 60 years of age and older, who is homebound (doesn’t drive or very seldom drives), and is unable to shop and prepare meals due to health challenges is eligible.

  • Our Social Services Director, Va,ce Goodmanwill walk you through the process! First, we confirm eligibility and then complete an intake process that covers all the details.

  • With increased inflation, the full price of a meal is currently $8.50, but we never pass that cost to seniors. We ask seniors who can to contribute $3.00 per meal (only 35% of the actual cost). Average monthly costs are $63. If a senior is uanble to contribute toward the cost of their meals, we have funding resources.

  • No eligible senior is denied service due to an inability to pay. Based on the need, we have alternate funding sources available to assist.

  • Clients can receive up to 5 meals a week (one for each weekday).

  • We deliver between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM (Monday through Friday).

  • Call us two days in advance so that we can arrange to provide a frozen or shelf-stable meal the day before the appointment if needed.

  • To ensure everyone’s safety, we close during inclement weather (and announce our closings on WLOS and social media).

    We are also closed during most major holidays, and during two fundraiser events. (See our Closures page.)

  • Each meal provide 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals for a senior adult. Our meals are reviewed and approved by a registered dietician.

  • Meals are prepared by Chef Charles and our kitchen staff in our complete commercial kitchen by our staff at our 146 Victoria Road building.

  • We offer additional services that keep seniors healthy and safe, like pet food delivery and snow-boxes with ready-to-eat meals for winter weather days when inclement weather makes it unsafe to deliver.

  • Our pet food program is very important to our seniors. Research indicates that pet ownership can have a positive effect on one’s physical and mental health. We want to make sure their trusted companions have the food they need to be healthy and happy as well.

    During the enrollment process, we ask clients about their need for pet food and arrange for delivery once a week.

  • Over 300 volunteers devote countless hours a year to offering a friendly greeting, delivering a nutritious meal, and providing an informal safety check to homebound seniors. They are wonderful folks who care and want to make a difference in people’s lives.
