Fill Their Plates
Matching Gift Campaign

Every weekday, homebound seniors across Buncombe County answer their doors to a hot meal and a familiar face. They can count on that because our community understands that a neighbor who cannot fill their own plate should not have to go without.

This year, our goal is to raise $112,000 during our Fill Their Plates campaign. Thanks to our sponsors, your gift goes twice as far.

Increased Hunger Means Increased Need

Last year, we delivered more than 171,700 nutritious meals to homebound seniors across Buncombe County — the most in our 50-year history. Because of your generosity, more than 700 homebound seniors receive the nutritious meals they depend on.

“Without Meals on Wheels, a lot of days I wouldn’t eat anything.”

Bob and Shirley Burns first joined Meals on Wheels in the 1990s. They made weekly meal deliveries to homebound seniors living in the MLK Boulevard and Town Mountain neighborhoods. For nearly 20 years, they served as dedicated volunteers and strongly believed in the mission of Meals on Wheels. Their passion for caring for others, especially the homebound elderly of Buncombe County, continues today through the generosity of their son Matthew Burns who established The Burns Family Foundation in his’ parents’ memory.

An Anonymous Family Foundation

Thanks to a generous family foundation, every gift to this campaign is matched dollar for dollar this fall. So a gift of $35 covers ten meals for two homebound seniors, delivered Monday through Friday. It also covers ten visits, because every meal arrives with a volunteer at the door and a few minutes of conversation. For many of the homebound seniors on our routes, these visits are the only times all week that someone comes by.

Deerfield has supported Meals on Wheels for over 20 years and is a major contributor to our efforts to enhance food security for seniors. In 2000, they started a cherished tradition of preparing Thanksgiving Day meals for our seniors home alone on the holiday. Since 2001, their residents have been delivering meals to seniors in the Shiloh community every Monday through Thursday.

Rex Ballard and his team have supported Meals on Wheels for nearly 30 years! During Rex’s tenure as a board member, he helped design and build our current building, enabling us to expand services and serve even more seniors. He and his team often help with general maintenance of our space, including snow removal to keep staff and volunteers safe during inclement weather.
